The Crown Board Plug is so that you can clean and inspect the crown board during winter, while preventing bees from escaping into the cold, and also to prevent them from getting agitated and releasing unnecessary heat from the hive.
I found on several occasions during the winter periods, when I would give the bees fondant or cleaning away old fondant that the bees would get agitated or fly around in the middle of the cold snowy period, and as a result some would die.....
With the Crown Board Plugs, you can plug the holes in the crown board while you clean the top, remove any moisture or hard fondant, then once ready , remove the plugs and install the Perspex lid and roof, all with no bee escaping ! Seriously one of my best tools during winter !
